Fabricator: Concept Design

One of many machines placed and interacted with inside the player's spaceship base, I used the design process for the Fabricator as a way to solidify the look and theming that would inform the rest of the game's props. I settled on a cross between a 1920s Singer sewing machine and heavy factory equipment, as a way to communicate that this thing was a DIY tool for the player with serious power and capability. In the detailing phase, though, I made sure to give it plenty of dents, scratches, and rust stains for a well-used look befitting a down-on-their-luck space smuggler. The rough finish and heavy machinery look contrasts with the sci-fi hologram decorations, which not only echo the pinstripe graphics and art-deco branding of the 20's theme, but provide useful real-time information to the player.
